The first 6 to 8 years
of a child’s life are globally acknowledged to be the most critical years for
lifelong development since the pace of development in these years is extremely
rapid. Recent research in the field of neuroscience, particularly on the brain,
has provided convincing evidence of the ‘critical periods’ located within these
early years for the forming of synaptic connections in the brain and for the
full development of the brain’s potential. Research has also indicated that if
these early years are not supported by, or embedded in, a stimulating and
enriching physical and psychosocial environment, the chances of the child’s
brain developing to its full potential are considerably, and often
irreversibly, reduced. This stage in life is also important as a foundation for
the inculcation of social values and personal habits, which are known to last a
lifetime. What follows logically is the crucial importance of investing in
these early years to ensure an enabling environment for every child, and thereby
a sound foundation for life, which is not only the right of every child but
which will also impact, in the long term, the quality of human capital
available to a country.
ஒரு குழந்தையின் ஆயுட்காலத்தில்
6 முதல் 8 வயது வரையிலான பருவமானது அதன் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதுமான வளர்ச்சிக்கான மிக முக்கியமான
கட்டம் என்றும், அப்பருவத்தில்தான் அதிவேக வளர்ச்சி ஏற்படுகிறது என்றும் உலகளாவிய அளவில்
இன்று ஒப்புக்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த ‘முக்கியமான காலகட்டத்தில்’ மூளையின் முழுமையான
வளர்ச்சிக்குத் தேவைப்படும் நரம்பிணைப்புகளை ஏற்படுத்தும் காலம் என்று நிறுவுவதற்கான
போதுமான ஆதாரங்களை சமீபத்திய நரம்பியல் துறை ஆய்வுகள், குறிப்பாக மூளை வளர்ச்சி குறித்த
ஆய்வுகள் வழங்கியுள்ளன. இந்த ஆரம்பகாலகட்டத்தில், மூளைக்குத் தூண்டுதல் தரும் வகையிலான
பயிற்சிகள் மட்டுமல்லாது உடலையும், சமூகம் சார்ந்த உளவியல் வளர்ச்சியையும் மேம்படுத்தும்
சூழலை ஏற்படுத்தி தரவேண்டும் என்று அந்த ஆய்வுகள் கூறுகின்றன. இல்லையெனில், குழந்தையின்
முழுமையான மூளை வளர்ச்சியானது கணிசமாகக் குறைவதற்கான வாய்ப்புகள் உள்ளன. அதுமட்டுமின்றி,
வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் ஒருவரை வழிநடத்தத் தேவையான சமூக மதிப்பீடுகள் மற்றும் பண்புகளை
விதைப்பதற்கான சரியான பருவமும் இந்த குழந்தைப் பருவமே. இதனால் நாம் அறிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டியது
என்னவெனில், ஒவ்வொரு குழந்தையின் மேம்பட்ட வளர்ச்சிக்கும், சிறப்பானதொரு வாழ்விற்கான
அடித்தளத்தை அமைத்திடவும் இந்த தொடக்க காலகட்டமானது மிக மிக முக்கியமானது. இது ஒவ்வொரு
குழந்தையின் அடிப்படை உரிமை மட்டுமல்லாது, நீண்டகால அடிப்படையில் ஒரு நாட்டின் தரமான
மனித மூலதனத்தை உருவாக்கிட நாம் பொறுப்பான முறையில் பங்களிப்பதாகும்.
